Question: Per WPA rules, if my opponent has a dry break, and I come to the table and make a called ball (8-ball game) but I scratch, is the table still open?

Answer: Yes

Details:

Rule 4.4 — Open Table / Choosing Groups requires the shooter to legally pocket the called ball to establish a group. It states:

“If he fails to legally pocket his called ball, the table remains open and play passes to the other player.”

In thia situation:

• Neither player has solids or stripes yet. The returning player may shoot either group and establish it by legally pocketing the called ball without fouling.

• The pocketed object ball stays down. It is not spotted. See Rule 4.7. The table remains open.
